Homesteading is a lifestyle that attracts all sorts of people, but there are so many young families adopting the idea of self-sufficiency. The attraction for some lies in teaching children a level of independence they won’t get in a ‘conventional’ upbringing or being able to provide high quality, homegrown food. Either way, parenting little ones on a homestead comes with unique challenges – challenges that are foreign to me!
That is why I teamed up with Kayla from The Happiest Homestead on Earth (@thehappiesthomesteadonearth on Instagram)! I asked her to compile a list of her favorite “mom hack” products that have helped her homesteading mom journey.
The Hidden Homestead
Kayla lives with her husband and (almost) 1 year old son, Oliver, on a secluded acreage in Michigan. They recently upgraded their chicken coop (lovingly named Eggcot after Disney’s Epcot) to make room for a few new clucky arrivals. If you can’t tell, Kayla loves all things Disney! She also grows vegetables so she and her family can enjoy homegrown food.
Kayla’s Reason:
We homestead and work towards self-sufficiency to set up our family for the future. When we’re old and gray we hope Oliver and his future family will enjoy the fruits of our labor.
Kayla’s Homestead Mom Essentials:
1. Glass Baby Food Storage Containers
Pureeing your own baby food, whether it be from your garden or elsewhere, saves money and is great for your kiddo. We were able to mix and match his favorite foods and ensure he only had fresh meals. I’d puree veggies and fruits ahead of time, freeze them, and pull them out the day before he’d eat them to thaw. Simple and easy.
If you’re diapering disposable or cloth, these pre-folds are convenient to keep around. I was gifted these and ended up using them for baby, for cleaning, for just about anything! They’re handy and reusable to reduce your household waste.
3. Baby Monitor
Having a baby monitor that didn’t require an internet connection was crucial for me. Our reception is unreliable and with new mom nervousness I always want to be able to hear my son. I had a baby monitor set similar to this and it was so helpful to clip it to my waist while little one was napping so I could finish chores.
4. Coffee Maker
I was gifted this machine and absolutely love it. It keeps my coffee hot for hours which is perfect since I never get to drink it when I want to. It comes with a reusable coffee filter which saves my conscience and money.
The countertop compost bin allows us busy homesteading mamas to toss away our food scraps without stepping away from the kitchen (and little humans).
6. Radio Flyer Stroll ‘N Trike
I have a similar trike to this one and get compliments everywhere I go. I use this far more than I use a traditional stroller, at the homestead and in town. It’s way lighter than a stroller and I can get in and out with little one much quicker. It grows with the child as they develop and grow independence.
I’m very conscious of the cleaning chemicals used at my home with a sensitive little one around. I make my own using vinegar, water, and essential oils. Spray bottles from the stores frustrate me so I’m looking forward to trying these.
Frequent wakings recently have prompted me to purchase a pair of wireless ear buds. I can listen to my podcasts or music as I rock my son to sleep for the 3rd time at 2:00am. They’re also convenient for listening while gardening, doing chores, etc.
9. Instant Pot
There are so many benefits to the Instant Pot. I fell in love with my Instant Pot when I realized I could quickly steam veggies for my son. I fell in love again when I realized it didn’t heat my house up. And again when I realized I could start the cooking process and walk away. Any time saver helps in motherhood and I’m so grateful I have one of these.
Thank you SO MUCH Kayla for sharing your favorite homestead mom hacks! I love these picks because there is a very mindful balance of new technology vs. old classics. As modern homesteaders we have the privilege of utilizing technology where it is beneficial to our day-to-day lives. My rule is that if it helps boost my efficiency a considerable amount, it’s worth it. There are so many frivolous items out there, and it’s important to be aware of what helps us and what hinders us!
We both hope that this list helps and inspires fellow homesteaders that have young children or are planning to start their family!
