The ‘real’ free range eggs. Egg carton labeling is confusing. Cage-free, free-range, pastured… what do they really mean? The USDA’s definition of “free-range” simply means the laying hen “has been allowed access to the outside”. (Source: USDA) Does that sound vague to you? It does to us. That wording leaves a lot of freedom for interpretation by large-scale egg operations.

At our farm, chickens are allowed to truly free-range a ~1/4 acre fenced area full of trees, stumps, brush, grass, and all the bugs they could ever want.

When you crack open a true free range or pastured egg next to a conventionally raised egg, you can see (and taste) the difference. While studies aren’t complete, there is a lot of evidence that true free range eggs have less cholesterol, higher omega-3 fatty acids, and more vitamins and minerals.
